Caserta

Caserta is a province of the Campania, not too far from Naples. It is an important agricultural, commercial and industrial city. The city is best known for the Palace of Caserta: an exceptional 18th century royal establishment featured for the broad sweep of its design, incorporating not only an imposing palace and park, but also much of the surrounding natural landscape and an ambitious new town laid out according to the urban planning precepts of its time. Because its position is better get Caserta by car or shuttle from its neighbouring sites.

History

Modern Caserta was established around the defensive tower built in Lombard times by Pando, Prince of Capua. Pando destroyed the original city around 863. The original population moved from Caserta Vecchia (former bishopric seat) to the current site in the 16th century. With the arrival of Carlo of Bourbon in 1734, Caserta enjoyed a period of true splendour and saw both the construction of the Royal Palace and an overall restoration of the city. The project was entrusted to Luigi Vanvitelli who also oversaw the building of the Carolina Aqueduct designed to supply the waterfalls and fountains in the Royal Park.

Throughout the 300 acre complex you can admire esplanades, formal gardens, ornate fountains, the Large Fish Livery, the Miniature Castle and English Garden, an Open Air Theatre, and a magnificent water fall, which Vanvitelli himself enriched with many sculptures.
